Bilingual Program
Columbia Elementary's
Bilingual Program is one that supports Wenatchee School
District's goals and philosophy of bilingual education. We
believe in providing all language minority students with
access to quality subject matter instruction, English
language development, and primary language development. We
also believe in providing opportunities for all students and
staff to participate in activities that develop and promote
an awareness and appreciation for cultural
pluralism.
We are committed to home
language instruction in the primary grades where possible.
In agreement with current empirical studies and research, we
further wish to emphasize our support of the development of
literacy in the first language at all levels. We support a
strong ESL component as well. Columbia fully integrates all
populations to promote cultural pluralism and healthy social
relationships.
Columbia's Bilingual
Program was recognized as a Program of Excellence for 1999
by the Washington Association for Bilingual
Education.
